Sharan is a charitable trust that is committed to providing comprehensive rehabilitation facilities for paraplegic patients and qualitative care for the elderly.
The institution was founded in 1968 as ‘The Society for The Rehabilitation of Paraplegics’ by Dr KS Masalawala. He began with a humble 10-bed unit at the Orthopaedic Department of JJ Hospital, Mumbai. In 1987 Sharan established its own facilities in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Today, Sharan is run from a large campus, which includes a home for senior citizens.
Since its inception, Sharan has successfully rehabilitated 850 paraplegic patients and has provided accommodation to 500 senior citizens.
Smt. Kamla Raheja Rehabilitation Centre
Sharan provides much-needed rehabilitation services and support to paraplegic individuals at its Smt. Kamla Raheja Rehabilitation Centre. The centre addresses the needs of underprivileged patients from government and municipal hospitals. It seeks to provide these patients with a strong support system empowering them to lead meaningful lives.
Designed keeping in mind the special needs of its residents, the centre is noted for its barrier-free environment and international-standard facilities. It can accommodate 40 paraplegics at a time in four wards.
The rehabilitation programme is completely free of cost for residents, and includes accommodation, sustenance and medical care. Residents undertake rehabilitation programmes that help increase their independence, so as to facilitate their inclusion in society. Educational, career and vocational guidance is also provided by the centre to enhance residents’ employment prospects.
Kamla Raheja Home for Senior Citizens
Sharan’s Kamla Raheja Home for Senior Citizens was established in 1997, with the goal of providing quality and secure accommodation at a reasonable cost, to residents above the age of 60. The centre is housed in a four-storied modern building, with 45,000 sq ft to accommodate 60 senior citizens. It provides secure, hygienic and comfortable accommodation. The centre also has associations with neighbouring hospitals in case of emergencies.
